I will provide emotional, educational and physical support for families before, during and immediately after the birth. I will work with the nurses and physicians, and facilitate communication between the healthcare team, the patient and the family members at the time of the birth. I do not perform clinical or medical tasks, such as fetal heart tone checks, or postpartum clinical care.
During labor, I can provide comfort with pain relief techniques, such as breathing, relaxing, massage and laboring positions. When medications are administered during labor, I will provide information, emotional support, and comfort measures. When a mom experiences an unplanned cesarean birth, I will provide support and encouragement.
I act as an advocate for the mother, helping to follow or incorporate changes into the birth plan as needed, and enhancing communication between the mother and health care provider, ensuring she has a positive and safe birth. We never take the place of the father or support person, but is there to complement and enhance your experience.
